Since we started in the Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah DJ and Dancer business, we have coexisted at these celebrations working alongside photographers. In all those years, we’ve learned that there are a great many things that our party staff can do to help the photographer without detracting from our own objective. In reality, our “objective” is intrinsically tied to that of the photographer, caterer, videographer, and every other event professional – and that objective is success.
At a recent rehearsal, which our team do regularly, I invited Photographer Gabriel Fredricks to come out and speak to our staff, and give them some insights as to how a photographer works at a Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah. As Gabriel spoke, enthusiastic hands shot up with question after question. As you can tell from the images here, our staff was mesmerized with Gabe’s extensive knowledge of the mechanics of Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah parties, and his charming wit and animated personality as well.
A few of the things Gabriel shared were more revelation, like “the smile”. Any dancer or party motivator who has ever worked for Cutting Edge Entertainment can attest to the fact that smiling is the cardinal rule. I’ve always stressed that a non-smile in the background of a perfect photo could compromise the image, and Gabe agreed. Additionally, he had endless other ideas and thoughts regarding how event staff (dancer, DJ and MC) could be an invaluable help to the photographer in doing their job, again, without detracting from their own jobs.
Overall, this whole experience was impressive. Everything from Gabe’s shared experience, to our own staff’s sponge-like interest in learning how to do a better job. Also, while Gabe spoke, one of the talented photographers from his staff – Monica – shot pictures to document the occasion. On top of it all, this rehearsal was hosted at the Freestyle Dance Academy, on the grounds of Camp America. Our own MC, DJ and dancer Tony Azzaro is the director of the fledgling dance school, and we were honored to have him accommodate our staff. Freestyle Dance Academy, located in Bucks County, is a world-class facility and was a really cool change of scenery.
Tony sharing his experience.
Our staff – Smiling, laughing and learning.
Julia – ever the inquisitive one.
Nate – Awed by the Doctore.
Matt in the Hat.
All in all, it was a very educational experience for all. Many thanks to Gabriel Fredricks from Philip Gabriel Photography, the Freestyle Dance Academy, and our amazing staff!
