One of our favorite event venues in the city of Philadelphia is The Loews Hotel. Located conveniently on Market Street in Center City Philadelphia, the Loews might be officially categorized as a five star hotel, but in our minds it’s a solid ten. Over the course of the past few years we have had the pleasure of providing DJ and lighting services for countless weddings, bar and bat mitzvah parties, corporate events, college formals and just about any other type of social celebration you can think of, and we’ve come to fall head over heels in love with the Loews and it’s staff. Not only is it a great place, but the folks there are great people who excel at customer service and, well, just being great.

The Loews Philadelphia has three amazing and unique event spaces; The Regency Ballroom, The Millennium Ballroom, and – as the Philadelphia Radio DJ used to say – “High atop the P.S.F.S. Building in Philadelphia” – the amazing 33rd floor. The Loews Philadelphia’s 33rd floor consists of three separate spaces; The Terrace, LeScaze and Howe, all blending into what one might call a single facility within itself. It is the 33rd floor of The Loews – specifically Howe – which we chose to be the focus of our attention in this article. With the help of Lisa Strickland, Senior Catering Manager at the Loews, as well as Photographer Kevin York and Event Filmmaker Cinemacake, we (Cutting Edge Entertainment) put together a photo and video shoot not only to feature the breathtaking views of this magnificent space, but how our L.E.D. up lighting could transform something great into something even greater.

Cutting Edge Uplighting from CinemaCake Filmmakers on Vimeo.

There is really no need to elaborate on the atmosphere and ambiance lighting can add to a space, as the image from Kevin York and the video clip produced by CinemaCake speak for themselves. We are proud to be a preferred vendor at The Loews Philadelphia, and are excited that in addition to our DJ services, our L.E.D. lighting can enhance and add to the already spectacular space with views of the Philadelphia skyline from every angle.

If you are looking for a diverse and unique space for your wedding reception, bar or bat mitzvah or any other type of event you can imagine, we suggest you take a close look at The Loews Philadelphia. You won’t be disappointed.

Although the Cutting Edge Entertainment Dance Crew has been the choice of some of the most prominent band leaders, DJ companies and entertainers in the City of Philadelphia, it is always the greatest honor to be called upon to entertain for our industry colleagues personal events. Not only did Cutting Edge have the pleasure of entertaining at the Bat Mitzvah of Danielle Williams, but it just so happens that Danielle’s parents are Dave and Sheryl Williams from CinemaCake, by far one of the most prominent and talented event cinematography companies in Philadelphia.

Which is how we ended up with such an awesome video – as a thank you from Dave and Sheryl – highlighting our staff in action at Danielle’s Bat Mitzvah. Dancers Nate, Tony, Emily and Brittany bring super charged energy to every event, and combined with the mad editing skills of Jeremy from CinemaCake, and topped off with the original music of Samik G (another Cutting Edge alumn) the results are truly explosive.

After watching the first edit with Pedro, followed by a moment of silence, Pedro turned to me with a look of awe and uttered one word… “Intense”.

I’d have to agree with him.

Thank you Dave and Sheryl,

I was introduced to my first event filmmaker in 1993. At the time David Stiles was operating out of a small apartment in Northeast Philadelphia under the name “Video Styles” (clever, huh?) that seconded as his editing studio. It just so happened that I was looking for a videographer to shoot some demo video for my fledgling DJ company, but what I found in Mr. Stiles was much more than a simple videographer… I found a filmmaker. The work that Dave was doing was so cutting edge (when the term fits, use it), that he literally blew away anything I’d ever seen before, and after some coercing, Dave agreed to do some “pro bono” work for Cutting Edge Entertainment.

Sadly for us, but good for Stiles, he was SO good that we lost him to N.F.L. Films about a decade later. David Stiles has moved on from the event business, and is now an accomplished editor and film producer (and Emmy Award Winner… Just Google him) for the good folks at N.F.L. The loss was bittersweet.

It took me almost a decade to find another videographer whom I considered to be the caliber of David Stiles… and coincidentally, his name was Dave as well.

Now before I continue, I should probably say that my little story of David and David doesn’t mean there aren’t other great videographers in the Philadelphia market that produce exceptional quality event videos, but few stand out in my mind as to call them filmmakers.

Truth be told, I’d never applied the term “filmmaker” to a video produced for a wedding, bar or bat mitzvah prior to meeting Dave Williams (my second Dave). Williams coined the phrase, and I adopted it… It fit. Having done some video work myself for some YouTube projects, I’m living proof that anyone can just pick up a camera, point, and shoot, but a camera does not a videographer make. Trust me, I’m no filmmaker. To turn a video of a wedding or a bat mitzvah into something so well crafted and carefully shot and edited into something wholly entertaining and, well, totally friggin cool takes serious skills. It’s a way of telling a story using imagery to evoke emotion and capture precious moments, weaving them all together to make something more akin to a major motion picture than a home movie.

So what inspired me to write a blog post all about videography and film making? Well, a few weeks ago Dave Williams sent me a link to a music video he had created to be debuted at his own daughter’s bat mitzvah. I was awed. Now keep in mind, I don’t get to see too many of these, and the last time I remember seeing one anything close to this was ten years ago, by that other Dave who now wins Emmy Awards. I’d almost forgotten how awesome a video could be.

Take a look and judge for yourself. (Dave is “Gus” the bus driver)
<sp/>

<sp/>

And the outtakes…

<sp/>

So umm, yeah. pretty cool huh? As you can probably guess, it’s not cheap to produce something like this, but really, really cool things rarely are.

No, Mr. Williams didn’t pay me to say any of this. If he were to ask Dave Stiles as to my motives, Stiles would probably tell him that I was one of his biggest fans, and that perhaps somewhere deep down, I wished I was selling videography instead of DJ services. He might even be right. But when something is this good, it kind of sells itself. Or maybe, just maybe, I’m looking to score a few more pro bono demo videos from another great film maker.

And if you aren’t impressed yet, feel free to check out some more amazing stuff at Dave Williams website (see below). You won’t be disappointed.

Cutting Edge Entertainment Presents Generaton Next; The Next Generation Of Bar/Bat Mitzvah MC/DJs

Since 1992, Cutting Edge Entertainment has provided MCs, DJs & Dancers at virtually thousands of events. Although many of the Cutting Edge staff like Pedro, Kevin, Marc and Craig have been entertaining at events for well over a decade, staying ‘Cutting Edge’ requires an infusion of young new ideas and talent to keep things fresh. There is no other DJ company in Philadelphia, of for that matter in North America that has brought the caliber of performer to a Bar or Bat Mitzvah event that CEE has, and with our ‘Generation Next’ we intend to continue this tradition well into the future.

Richie

Richie has been with Cutting Edge for over fifteen years. A graduate of Temple University, Richie now works full time as a DJ at both clubs and parties, and is a mix-master having spun at Bar and Bat Mitzvahs since 1995. He brings an unparalleled knowledge of music and with it a clear understanding of DJ entertainment. Although it is hard to be certain, it is likely that Rich has worked more parties than any other MC/DJ at Cutting Edge Entertainment.

Tony

A Junior at Temple University, an assistant H.S. football coach and an import from the great state of Texas, Tony is about as all-American as they come. Starting out at Cutting Edge as a dancer, he later evolved into a hot commodity as a Sweet 16 DJ. Tony is as good of an entertainer as he is good looking, and brings a polished style and confidence as a party MC. Tony’s certainly got a southern charm unique to the Philly mitzvah market.

Shoshana

Triple threat… Singer/Dancer/MC, Shoshana rocks the house at Bar & Bat Mitzvahs. Cutting Edge has waited seventeen years to bring a female MC to the table, and we couldn’t have asked for a better one. As a Junior at the University of The Performing Arts, she is serious about performing and will likely leave her mark as one of the best MCs Philly has ever known.

Jason

Mr. Penn State University, Jason is a Beta Sig and proud of it. Young, confident and talented this guy lives and breathes DJ, having worked at almost every club and bar in State College, PA. Jason started at CEE as a DJ assistant, but quickly rose through the ranks determined to become an MC (trust us, he wouldn’t take no for an answer). One of our hardest working MCs, Jason strives for success, and brings that energy and enthusiasm to every event.

Nate

Nate is the Pied Piper of Bar & Bat Mitzvahs. He literally owns the kids with his charisma, presence and dance talent. More than that Nate is a natural born leader, having been president of his Senior class at Abington High School, he is now a senior at West Chester University and his knack for taking charge has taken him from dancer, to co-choreographer, and now to MC in six short years.

Generation Next…
